First Impressions: Design, Safety, Comfort and Accuracy

TenPoint has really incorporated some nice features in the Lady Shadow . When you first look at this crossbow, it is evident that is was designed with a lady hunter in mind. The Muddy Girl pink camo gives it a bit of sass (yes, we used that word in a crossbow review!) and the pink strings and cables finish out the pink theme. Combined with the jet black limbs, this is really a head turner.

The design is built on TenPoint’s FSB (Functionally Superior Bullpup) stock and offers a very nice weight distribution. Speaking of weight, the Lady Shadow has a skeletal stock as well as a carbon injected barrel to really minimize weight. Connecting the stock to the barrel are a set of rubber dampeners that serve a dual purpose, to cut vibration and noise, and to keep fingers and thumbs out of the flight path.

This is a crossbow that was built to be nimble and to get you into places you might not normally be able to take a crossbow. At 6.4 lbs., and only 13.5 inches axle-to-axle when cocked, the Lady Shadow will neither tire you out nor hold you back.

Kinetic Energy of the Lady Shadow

TenPoint Lady Shadow2The Lady Shadow offers a lot of punch for its compact frame. Depending on which arrow weight you go with, you are looking at hitting with 99 to 104 ft. lbs. of energy. The tested arrow weight which allows for the 350 fps rating was 375 grains which is actually on the low end of the power range. We tested with the 435-grain Magnum XX75 arrows which slowed the overall speed to just under 330 fps, but actually raised the kinetic energy to 104 lbs. Either way, you are going to have plenty of oomph to get the job done.

Ballistic Data For The TenPoint Lady Shadow

Your actual results will vary slightly depending on weather, and significantly with arrow weight change. See our Crossbow Ballistics Guides section for a complete understanding of how we conducted our tests and why this data matters.

Hunting with the Lady Shadow

Given the accuracy we experienced, hunting with the Lady Shadow should offer some fun times while stocking up on meat. The light weight will make taking the Lady Shadow into the field a pleasure, and the great trigger is going to make those shots much easier. The multi-reticle scope is clear and will allow for accurate shot placement at a multitude of ranges. We really like the red/green illumination of the scope as it will make those early morning and late evening shots much easier to take.

Tight hunting quarters? No problem here…the Lady Shadow is only 13.5” axle-to-axle when cocked! Overall, this is a very capable hunting crossbow that also adds a little bit of class for the lady hunter.

How Quiet is the Lady Shadow

The Lady Shadow is actually a fairly quiet crossbow to shoot. This was a bit of a surprise given the 180-lb. limbs, but there definitely wasn’t the same snap we have experienced on other bows in this draw range. We think this definitely has something to do with the incorporation of the rubber safety wings which also go a long way towards dampening sound and eliminating vibration.

Cocking the Lady Shadow

TenPoint Lady Shadow3We did not experience any issues with cocking the Lady Shadow using the ACUdraw™ system. This system only requires about 5 lbs. of effort to crank, which you can almost do with your index finger. We didn’t get to try the ACUdraw50™ system, but as we understand, it will significantly cut the effort required to cock. All in all, for the extra $70 or so, we would strongly recommend most ladies get the ACUdraw™ just to make life that much easier.

Quality of the Optics

The included 3x scope was quite adequate for most shooting situations. Its multiple aim points (20, 30, 40, and 50 yards) made shooting at various ranges very comfortable, which is always a great thing in a hunting crossbow. The last thing you want to be thinking about when that trophy steps out is how much you need to hold high to hit your mark! The scope is also illuminated in red and green, with a variable brightness.

What Arrows to use with the Lady Shadow

The Lady Shadow comes standard with three 20” Magnum XX75 arrows. These are 2219 Easton aluminum arrows and are fletched slightly offset. They come with the Superbrite Omni-Nock and are pretty much ready to go right out of the box. If you are looking to upgrade, just be sure what you are getting is something with enough spine to handle 180 lb. limbs and speeds that can approach 350 fps.

Overall Thoughts

The TenPoint Lady Shadow is an overall pleasure to shoot as well as just to look at. The Muddy Girl camo really does highlight who this crossbow was built for, and it is really cool that we are having so many female hunters hitting the field that there is enough demand for a crossbow like this to be built. From the ease of cocking with the ACUdraw™ system to the skeletonized stock to the carbon injected barrel, this crossbow was built with a smaller-framed hunter in mind. This is not an entry-level price point at around $1100 msrp, but it is certainly a crossbow that means business, and shows some flash still while doing that business.
