Assembly of the Crossbow

Assembling the Southern Crossbow Rebel 350 is pretty straightforward, and I was able to assemble mine within about 10 minutes. You attach the cable slide to the cables, then mount the limbs onto the stock. With that done, you can attach the foot stirrup, then mount the scope and quiver. After that, you’re ready to sight ‘er in!

How Accurate and Powerful Is It?

Before I could begin testing the crossbow’s power and accuracy, I took a few minutes to sight in the scope. Within 3 shots, I had the windage and elevation properly adjusted to hit dead-center from 15 yards, after which I started to test the x-bow at various ranges.

The Southern Rebel 350 delivers arrows to the target at 350 fps, with 109 ft. lbs. of kinetic energy. This is such a powerful crossbow that I had to set my target block against a tree stump to keep it from getting knocked over with every shot, even from 50 yards back!

The scope is quite accurate, and the arrows shoot straight enough to maintain a half-inch grouping from 25 yards out. From 50 yards, my groupings were within a one-inch circle, which means this crossbow is plenty accurate enough for any target or hunting purposes.

Hunting With the Rebel 350

1The Rebel 350 is accurate enough and powerful enough to take on even the toughest game in North American hunting, even the famed Cape buffalo and the vicious grizzly bear.

My only complaint about hunting with the Rebel 350 is its weight—this sucker is heavy! Weighing in at over 10 pounds, you’ll definitely notice that you’re carrying a mammoth crossbow when you have to trek in a mile or more to your hunting stand.

Despite the weight and bulk of the crossbow, I took the Rebel 350 on a moose hunt. Once we were set up in our ground blinds, I patiently waited for a moose to come into sight.

Within a couple of hours, my patience paid off, as a large bull moose ambled along within 20 yards of where I was hiding. I took careful aim, and let loose an arrow that ripped through his chest, in his left flank and out the other side with a huge, gaping exit wound. The moose stumbled off for about 10 yards, then fell to the ground. Good eatin’, he was!

Cocking The Rebel 350

This crossbow has a draw weight of just 155 pounds, but it does not come with a rope cocking device. I’ve read reports of folks getting a rope cocking device in the box with their Rebel 350, but there was not one in my box. Fortunately, I already had one on hand, and found that drawing the crossbow with the rope cocking device was smooth and easy.

The Crossbow Scope

The Rebel 350 comes with a 4×32 scope, which is adequate for most daytime hunting scenarios. The scope sights in easily, and holds true for several months of use and transport. The optics are nicely coated, and are resistant to fogging under all of the conditions I tested the crossbow. Unfortunately, this scope lacks decent light gathering qualities, so it’s next to useless in lower light conditions than bright daylight.

Arrows

51lQ4jiEp5L._SX425_You’ll get 4 aluminum arrows with the Rebel 350, but I don’t recommend using them. They bend and break easily, because the crossbow is simply too powerful for most aluminum arrows. Instead, I went with my old standby, the Firebolt carbon arrows at 400 grain.

Southern Crossbow says the minimum weight you should use with this crossbow is 350 grain, but I’d stick with 400 grain or heavier. Get yourself a nice set of 20” or 22” carbon arrows, and you’ll work things out just fine.

Safety and Design

The Rebel 350 is nicely designed, with a safety mechanism that works flawlessly every time. There is no anti-dry fire mechanism, though, which I think is a pretty major oversight these days for any crossbow to lack. Overall, though, the crossbow is sturdy and rock-solid, and should last for years of hunting.

Warranty

Southern Crossbows are covered by a limited lifetime warranty for the stock, and a five-year warranty for the limbs, cams, wheels, and axles. The warranty is not transferrable, though, and you must register your crossbow within 30 days of purchase to ensure you have a valid warranty. Southern’s customer support staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and easy to work with.

What Crossbow Case Fits the Southern Crossbow Rebel 350?

Choices of case matches for the Rebel 350 are limited as it is a very long crossbow. The Plno Soft-Sided Case is an affordable soft case match for under $50. It will also fit into the Plano 1133-00 Manta Crossbow Case which is a $120 hard case option.
